an open letter to (part one)
Dear Sir or Madam
I am writing to your theatre group in the hope that you will be able to help me with an arts project I have in mind for 2010.
I am currently in the process of teaching myself drawing and painting skills, as part of which I have attended a number of courses in Portraiture and Life Drawing and am currently an associate member of my local arts group. I am very passionate about art and have come up with a concept for an exhibition and submission for full membership that I need some assistance with.
The idea of the project is to take an album that I bought in 1987 as a starting point and to come up with a series of paintings based around the themes of the album and the individual songs: sometimes taking them quite literally, whilst others might only use part of a lyric or retain the title.
The end result would be a series of 10-15 paintings, each painting to be 12” x 12” – effectively serving as an old-style vinyl cover for each track on the album that I/we decide to use.
The album I have chosen as a starting point is “George Best” by The Wedding Present – partially because I want to capture some of the energy of the album on canvas and the slightly out of control feel of the tracks. The themes of the album revolve around relationships and different aspects of love: albeit mostly the darker aspects.
What I would like to do is to come and discuss the project with a local theatre group, discussing first the titles of the songs to see what images they suggest, then look at the lyrics and see how the story compares with the initial idea and come up with a series of scenes for each title that can be photographed and turned into paintings.
In this way we would not be tied specifically to the lyrics or original meaning of the song – ideally I would like to develop a story arc that continues through the paintings: so that by the end of the exhibition the viewer would feel like they have been on a journey.
Unfortunately I cannot afford to pay you for your time, which is partially why I have approached theatre groups and not models, but I would be willing to use any exhibition to partially promote your group and to discuss a share of any profits from sales.
If you would be interested in helping me with this project then please let me know via response to this email with a contact number and I will call you back at a time and date to suit you.
Thanks in advance for your response
